RE: BIG CHANGES ARE COMING SOON (Nov 15 2023)

Looks like we have to log in every time we visit the site - or is it just me?

RE: Support the slides?

Every RV I have ever owned had either the jacks and/or the suspension settle. If you place a support under a slide that does not settle at the same rate as the RV, it could cause damage or cause it to bind and not close. Manufacturers warn against using slide supports for these reasons. You slide should not sag when out. If it does you have other problems.

RE: Water tank has a drain?

Can't access the pic but yes your FW tank should have a drain. They are typically controlled with a ball valve or a screw on/off cap if the end of the pipe is threaded. Check to see if a ball valve is open or if it truly is leaking you can easily install one from Lowes. Hopefully you don't have a crack in a pipe or the tank itself. FWIW, your FW tank isn't just drained for winterization. I drain mine each time I come home to keep the water from just sitting stagnant.

RE: Progressive RV Insurance requires you to have another car?

Maybe it's state by state, but our progressive policy requires the MH to have it's own policy. It cannot be bundled with any other vehicle. Little different than what the OP is saying. Likely they don't want your RV be to your only mode of transportation. Op hasn't returned since the original post so it doesn't seem like we have any more information.

RE: Fifth Wheel Tag Renewal

Nobody uses "Trip Permits" in these high fee States??? I have very little information on trip permits and how they would be used to avoid paying personal property taxes you owe in your home state. And aren't they for commercial use?

RE: Fifth Wheel Tag Renewal

And NC uses a dubious method. You add up personal property tax, inspection, and tags you pay as much as CA. Yep. We get hammered every year. And when we moved here from MD a few years ago we got hit with the "welcome to NC " tax where we had to pay sales tax all over again on vehicles we already owned. Not sure where the money goes cuz it doesn't go to schools, roads or infrastructure.

RE: Fifth Wheel Tag Renewal

The bill should explain how the amount was derived. Unusually based on value of the RV the amount due is a percentage of that. The DMV could probably answer questions about the value. In some cases we have contested the value and had it reduced but it's a rare case and usually they are pretty close to value. Part of the of the cost of RV ownership. Some states are more expensive than others.

RE: Chassis warranty

Have you tried to contact the manufacturer and press them to coordinate the fix/appointment?

RE: '03 4 Winds 5000 21RB Chevy chassis 79k mi. what's it worth?

Looks like NADA (jd power) has it between $4,000 - $5,000. Mileage and the roof leak are factors. A few on line for sale range between $16,000 and $20,000.

RE: '03 4 Winds 5000 21RB Chevy chassis 79k mi. what's it worth?

It's worth what someone is willing to pay. I would suggest looking at NADA, KBB etc to get a value, as well as CL, FB marketplace, RV trader etc to see what units like yours are selling for. Deduct a considerable amount for the roof leak. You said you sealed it up but is there damage from the leak - rot or mold? With a fairly saturated market of used RV's and money being expensive right now those factors will come into play. Someone expects tires to be in good shape and will deduct from the price accordingly if they aren't, so having new ones on doesn't increase the price, it just keeps it from deducting from the value.

RE: batteries in the winter

I always brought my batteries in the garage on shelf with a trickle charger in the winter if I wasn't going to be using it for a while. An ounce of prevention...

RE: Slide for the coachman freelancer m3100

Did you mean Freelander? Likely in a bin or under the steps. Do you have your battery disconnect turned on? Have you tried plugging in to shore power?

RE: full wall slideout issue - maybe

As a follow up, you don’t say what year BayStar. Some years had issues with the slide motor bolts coming loose. I don’t think this caused your slide issue, just something to check from time to time. Per his signature: 2021 Newmar Baystar 3014

RE: Thermostat calling for heat and ac together!

You didn't mention what RV or make and model of the HVAC, but is it possible you have a heat strip and turned that on instead of the furnace?

RE: DEF fluid expiration?

One thing is for sure, you do not want to put bad DEF in it. This What happens? Do you have an example of using "bad" DEF? And how do you tell if it's bad? I have read of plenty. If bad, it can clog the injector, cause pump failure, damage the DEF quality sensor and and in some cases require the entire tank assembly (with pump, sensor) be replaced. It can quickly climb in to the thousands to repair. Care to share the links for these accounts? I've read a lot of the opposite. On a few diesel forums there are accounts of guys running plain water in their DEF tanks when they run out. Worst case was a "bad Def" code and went in to limp mode. Many say nothing happened at all. The DEF system is not much more than a pump with an atomizer that sprays a mixture of urea and water. Sans a few sensors, it doesn't affect the engine at all. Back on topic, different brands and sources all cite different shelf life and potential issues. Seems very ambiguous. To the OP, if you are worried about shelf life, aren't you concerned about the age of the DEF that's already in the RV when you put it away for storage? Personally I'd top it off before putting it away, or leave it and add new in the spring. I don't think it will matter a bit either way. I think this is a case of a solution in search of a problem.

RE: Two different size quick connects on my trailer?

I am guessing these are for outside shower/hoses. Sounds like you've never used them before in which case would they have water in them you need to get out? Typically these come with hoses stored somewhere already with the attachments on them. Maybe I am missing something.

RE: DEF fluid expiration?

I know the manufacturers say it has a shelf life, of course they want you to buy more DEF. But I have never heard of any actual issues with someone using old DEF. Lots of theories and warnings but I have never read of a documented case. It's urea and water and gets atomized into the exhaust. And are you going to drain the DEF in your tank in the spring? Isn't it probably just as old?

RE: Worst crash I ever saw !

A strong argument for being seat belted in a tow vehicle...even worse if your wife was walking back to make lunch. Appears to be a class A, don't understand the seatbelt in the tow vehicle. Seat belted in the RV, sure. Truck hit the front passenger corner. Belted or not, I am not sure it would matter in this case. on edit, Went through it frame by frame. No way the people in the MH survived. Semi went completely through the driver cabin, tore the house off the chassis, and ripped the MH chassis in half.
